

Hundreds of Tamil prisoners, who have been fasting for the past ten days, called of their fast yesterday (Jan 14) after receiving an assurance from the government that within the next two months the cases against them would be finalized, sources told The Island.
Mannar Bishop Rayappu Joseph visited the Colombo New Magazine prison to inform them of the government’s assurance following which they decided to call off the fast.
Prisoners in Kandy, Batticaloa, Colombo, Anuradhapura, Trincomalee and Negambo had been fasting for the past ten days demanding that the cases pending against them for several years be expedited.
