Indices gain and turnover exceeds billion-rupees ahead of elections

Turnover at the Colombo Stock Exchange exceeded the billion rupee mark with both indices gaining ahead of presidential elections today.

Yesterday the All Share Price Index gained 0.64 percent or 22.72 points to close at 3,554.45 while the Milanka Price Index of more liquid stocks closed at 4,066.9 after gaining 22.07 points or 0.55 percent, data from the Colombo Stock Exchange showed.

The bourse recorded a turnover of a little more than Rs. 1.5 billion after more than 31.6 million shares changed hands during the day which saw 85 counters make positive gains against 52 losses.

The top gainers were Aitken Spence Hotels, Carsons Cumberbatch, Environmental Resources Investments, Asian Hotels and Properties and Aitken Spence Holdings.

Aitken Spence Hotels gained Rs. 34.25 to close at Rs. 387.75 after 26,500 shares changed hands. Carsons Cumberbatch gained Rs. 12.25 to close at Rs. 515.50.

Environment Resources gained Rs. 6.25 with 461,500 shares being traded closing at Rs. 125.25.

Aitken Spence Holdings closed at Rs. 1,276 after gaining Rs. 25.

The biggest losers were John Keells Hotels, John Keells Holdings, Asiri Hospitals, Lion Brewery and Taj Lanka Hotels.

John Keells Holdings lost Rs. 0.75 to close at Rs. 173 while Asiri lost Rs. 0.50 to close at Rs. 9 with 475,000 shares changing hands during the day. Lion Brewery closed at Rs. 80 after losing Rs. 2 per share and Taj Lanka Hotels lost Rs. 1 to close at Rs. 26.75. -DD
