

The Inter School cricket encounter between St. Benedict’s College, Kotahena and St. Joseph’s College, Colombo will be played for the Mack-Croner Challenge Trophy from this year, according to a media release issued by the organizing committee of the match.
The annual St. Benedict’s College vs St. Joseph’s College First XI cricket match is one of the oldest cricket matches in the country. The past cricketers of St. Benedict’s College and St. Joseph’s College have come forward to present a challenge trophy in memory of two outstanding cricketers produced by the two schools, Benedictine Malcolm Mack and Josephian Trevor Croner, who captained their respective school First XI cricket teams in 1976.
This year, St. Benedict’s College will host the match at Kotahena on Friday 5th and Saturday 6th February commencing at 10.00 a.m. each day.
Being the host team this year, the organizing committee of St. Benedict’s College has made elaborate arrangements to conduct this eagerly awaited match in a fitting manner. Apart from the main award, several other individual awards will be on offer for players of both teams.
This year, St. Benedict’s College is led by Nishal Fonseka and the Josephians are skippered by Dinal Dhambarage.
Soon after the match and the awards presentation, a social for the past players and well wishers will be held on Saturday 6th Feb. at the Old Benedictines’ Sports Club from 6.30 p.m. onwards. The officials of both schools request the presence of all past players and well wishers to attend this grand event. Tickets are priced at Rs. 1,000/- per head inclusive of dinner and could be obtained from Old Benedictines’ Sports Club and any member of the organizing committee.
