Police disconnect speaker system at Hyde Park meeting
The speaker system installed at yesterday’s joint oppositions protest meeting in Hyde Park Colombo against the conduct of last weeks Presidential Election, was disconnected by police, prior to commencement of proceedings.
A large number of policemen assisted by the army, entered the grounds to disconnect the wires.
A spokesman for the UNF, said that the police initially refused them permission, even to conduct their meeting.
"We were sent from pillar to post. About half a day was spent going from one DIG to another. Once permission was granted to hold the meeting, we installed the speaker system. But all of a sudden, a large number of policemen barged in and disconnected all the wires," the spokesman added.
