JVP accepts Dayananda’s challenge to move SC against President

The JVP yesterday accepted Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayake’s challenge to move the Supreme Court against the re-election of President Mahinda Rajapaksa for a second term at the recently concluded polls.

The Opposition says President Rajapaksa manipulated the results to deny General (retd) Sarath Fonseka victory. JVP leader Somawansa Amarasinghe and SLFP (M) leader Mangala Samaraweea have alleged that the President won through a computer fraud.

Dissanayake on Wednesday dared the Opposition to take it up with the Supreme Court without raising the issue with those who could not do anything about it.

Addressing the media at party headquarters, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said the JVP would go before the Supreme Court within the stipulated period.

He accused the Elections Commissioner of playing a double game. An irate JVPer said that the Elections Chief had expressed his genuine views on the conduct of the election the day following the election. He said that Dissanayake was saying something else now. He emphasised that Dissanayake was playing a different tune due to pressure being brought on him by the government.

Silva vowed to produce the necessary evidence in Court to justify their allegations against the re-election of the President.

He said that in the run-up to the poll, Dissanayake requested Presidential Secretary Lalith Weerathunga to stop hosting people at Temple Trees at taxpayers expense. The media had reported what Dissanayake said during the campaign, Silva said. He also recalled Dissanayake’s failure to prevent the State-run media carrying out a mud slinging campaign in support of the President at the expense of his rival.

He expressed confidence that the President’s re-election could be successfully challenged in the Supreme Court, though the case would take years.
