Traders at the Pettah market sell oranges and apples
- fruits once considered a luxury but now widely available. Most of
the fruits are imported from neighbouring countries and China. A
typical text book example to show the effects of an open economy,
this trade shows how imported goods can be cheaper than, or
substitute, local produce while domestic producers have to compete
with imports. Traders said papayas and guavas are often imported
although they grow in Sri Lanka. |
