Goodbye Extremism?

Thank you for your editorial on the above subject in your paper of 2nd February 2010.

As we Sri Lankans learn to live and work in post war and post election Sri Lanka, it is good to ask some relevant questions.

Who is responsible for this extremism? All of us now refer to the violence of the LTTE and the JVP. Who created the LTTE and the JVP?

No student of the history of Ceylon/Sri Lanka can deny that the root cause of the youth unrest in the south is that the southern youth were not given their due place in our society. In the south from 1931, when we got the right to vote, our rulers failed to address the problems of the youth. After having patiently waited for decades the southern youth look up arms.

In the north too the so called leaders of the people lived and worked in Colombo and went to places like Jaffna only at election time. Like the southern leaders the northern leaders also failed to address the problems of the young people.

We in Sri Lanka today should realise that the LTTE and the JVP had to resort to violence because we did not listen to our youth and help them. It is not too late for us to see the reason why the LTTE and the JVP came into being. This will help us to solve our National problem and move forward as a nation. Are we Sri Lankans big enough to undertake this task?
