Thurstan College advanced to the top spot in the points table, recording an outright victory and a first innings victory during the course of the past week in the on-going Inter School Under-19 Division I Cricket tournament. Thurstan’s victory over Maliyadeva College, Kurunegala and the first innings victory over Mahinda College, Galle, helped them oust Ananda College, Colombo, who were reigning at the top of the Group A.
Neither Ananda or Royal (placed third) had tournament matches last week and they could not better their points.
Trinity and Dharmasoka are engaged in a close tussle to take the top spot in Group B.
The two schools were separated by a single point at last week’s points table. Dharmasoka beat Trinity on the first innings last week to claim the top spot for a short while, but the latter pulled off an exciting first innings victory over Maris Stella College, Negombo, over the weekend to regain the top seat. Their ninth wicket pair put on a partnership of 97 runs and posted 263 runs, in reply to Maris Stella’s 260 runs to earn first innings points.
Revata College, Balapitiya, also made a notable improvement by reaching the fifth spot with an outright victory over St. Aloysius’ College, Galle.
After suffering three outright defeats, they have now two consecutive outright victories in the tournament.
Isipatana and St. Joseph’s Colleges both topped their groups as they completed their league tournament matches, but they have left a chance for their opponents to overtake them. The Joes ended their tournament matches with a first innings victory over the Bens on Saturday.
D. S. Senanayake College advanced to the second spot in Group B by virtue of their outright victory over Kalutara Vidyalaya over the weekend. They have three outright victories to their credit and have a strong chance of dislodging the Joes from the top spot as they have three more matches to go.
Dharmapala, who are in the second spot in the points table in Group D, are likely to take the top spot when they play their last match. They are trail Isipatana by two points.
Meanwhile, Wesley College, Colombo, who were the woodenspoonists in Group A, managed to end their bad phase last week by recording an outright victory over Zahira College, to settle at sixth spot. While other teams are egding close to the completion of their group matches, Wesley have five of their tournament matches still to be played.
