Do not make baseless allegations about
presidential results – Vasu

The Leader of the New Democratic Front (NDF) and Opposition Leader of the Colombo Municipal Council, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, yesterday urged the Opposition political parties to desist from making baseless allegations about the results of the Presidential elections which could not be proved and to submit all the material that was available to file action in court.

"The Opposition political parties should go to courts and follow all the procedures which would be the basis for challenging the election results in court".

Addressing a media conference convened by the Socialist Alliance of five Left parties such as CPSL, LSSP, NDF, SLMP and the DVJP, at the late N. M. Perera Memorial auditorium at Cotta Road, Borella last noon, NDF Leader Vasudeva Nanayakkara said so.

Nanayakkara said that there might have been conditions and environment that were unjustifiable influence or unjustifiable activities before the elections. The votes were cast in a free and fair manner and they were counted ballot paper by ballot paper in the presence of all who were proper representatives had brought forward distinct results and beyond reasonable doubt the fact is the majority have voted against the General.

The majority of the people who voted looked forward to the preservation of democracy under whatever the circumstances may be, we have to protect the democratic rights and the democratic atmosphere in the country.

When clashes occur, democracy naturally gets buried or becomes causality. So democracy must be preserved at all costs, concluded Vasudeva Nanayakkara.

The General Secretary of the Socialist Alliance ex MP Raja Collure presided over the media conference and the General Secretary of the CPSL and Minister Dew Gunasekera, SLMP leader Ranjith Navaratna and Media Secretary of the Socialist Alliance ex Colombo Municipal Councillor L. R. Stephen were also present.

LSSP Leader and Minister Prof. Tissa Vitharna said yesterday that when one reviews the current election, it is very clear the forces of imperialism led by the US wanted the Neo-Liberalist policies that have been carried out in our country since 1977 which were reversed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, who departed from these policies during the four years he was in office and he was able to develop national democracies to change those policies and reverse the role of neo-liberal exploitation of our country and its people.

The people by granting a resounding victory to President Mahinda Rajapaksa, have defeated the reactionary forces led by American imperialists to foist a pro-imperialist government once again in our country.

"Therefore, we salute the people for having thwarted these efforts by this delusive victory and in doing so it was very clear that there was no possibility of a stable government coming out of a victory for ex-General Fonseka as the political parties that had come together in this united alliance were the UNP, JVP, TNA, SLMC and the DPF, whereas their policies were completely contradictory where one would have opposed the others policies. Even if they were victorious, it would have been impossible for them to form a stable government.

In this context, it is very clear that the promises that were made were purely made just to win the votes, the votes to defeat President Mahinda Rajapaksa and put Fonseka as President and if this happened, one could not imagine what would have happened thereafter. They were to establish a military dictatorship in our country and the people to be suppressed so that their Neo-Liberal policies were adopted again.
