Deshan reaches 1000 runs

St. Sebastian’s College batsman Deshan Dias reached 1000 runs for the season when he scored a half-century on the first day of their Under-19 match against St. Sylvester’s College in Kandy yesterday.

The wicketkeeper batsman went in to the match needing 25 runs to complete a well deserved 1000 runs for the season and reached the landmark on his way to 51.

Deshan who opens the batting for St. Sebastian’s had a highly successful season although his performances could not win him a place in the Sri Lanka Under-19 team.

He often provided good opening stands with Oshada Fernando as St. Sebastian’s went on to compile huge scores this season.

The left-hander reached the 1000 run mark in what was his 14th match. He has two centuries and eight half-centuries so far this season. In 20 innings he has maintained a healthy average of 54 runs and once carried the bat through for an unbeaten 78 runs in their match against St. Anthony’s College.

A sensible opener, Deshan’s best knocks this season were probably the best rearguard actions in the season.

After being forced to follow on in their match against St. Benedict’s College his back to the wall knock of 123 runs helped St. Sebastian’s force a draw. His 123 came in 272 balls.
