Coup a ruse to justify political victimization - Ranil

UNP and Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday said his party would reject in toto what he called a false allegation that the JVP and General Sarath Fonseka had been planning a military coup.

Addressing a press conference at the UNP Headquarters in Sirikotha yesterday, Opposition Leader said without making false allegations, the government should immediately release Gen. Fonseka and his supporters.

He described the detention of Fonseka as a ‘blow to democracy’. Gen. Fonseka had been politically victimised, he said.

The Opposition Leader said that upto now there had been no official charge sheet against those who had been taken into the custody over the alleged coup.

Wickremesinghe said that the government was

planning to remove Fonseka and others from politics by making use of the word ‘coup’. "We condemn this and call upon the government to stop making wild allegations and slinging mud at Opposition politicians," he said.
