Happy birthday!

Kuttan the oldest employee in the hospitality industry celebrated his 90th birthday amidst a large gathering of well-wishers at the Galle Face Hotel.

Kuttan who has hobnobbed with everyone from royal heads of state to Soviet Cosmonauts was born in Cochin but left his home at the age of 17 years to set foot in Sri Lanka and joined the heritage Galle Face Hotel.

He is the world’s oldest person still in employment said Vice President Galle Face group addressing the gathering present at Kuttan’s birthday celebration. He is still going strong and I am certain that he will reach 110 with ease said Mohotti.

Mr. Wickrama Weerasuriya who has known Kuttan for quite a number of years spoke highly of his respect towards the Gardiner family.

The Gardiners have looked after him at all times. Recollecting an incident he said when Kuttan had some financial difficulties his employer, Cyril Gardiner willingly helped him and assured him that he will help him any time if the need arises.

Son Sanjay Gardiner is now continuing to follow his father’s human qualities.

Kuttan will soon enter the Guinness Book of Records which he deserves said Wickrama Weerassuriya and said the Galle Face Hotel is now working on it.

The number of medals that adorns his white suit speaks volumes of his great service to the hotel.

Even today Kuttan walks one mile to work each morning to board the bus at the end of his afternoon shift has ruled out any likely imminent retirement.

Tourism Minister Achala Jagoda Chief Guest thanked the Gardiner family and the Galle Face Hotel for looking after Kuttan who has become a icon in the hospitality industry.
