SL Team Ready for Davis Cup

The four-member Sri Lanka team is successfully preparing for next March’s Davis Cup Asia-Oceania Zone Group-II to be held from March 5 at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) outdoor clay courts in Colombo against strong New Zealand.

Sri Lanka finished a successful training session in Thailand early this month in her preparation for the mega event and the SLTA sources said the team is very much confident in taking up the challenge of the fancied Kiwis.

Amresh, Amritha Excel at SSC

Carrying high hopes for title victories, Sri Lanka’s Amresh Jayawickrema and Amritha Muttiah had reached the semi-finals by last Thursday (18) in their respective Singles draws with relative ease at the 26th annual International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Tennis Tournament being conducted at the Singhalese Sports Club in Colombo.

Top seed Amresh Jayawickrema, an ITF World Junior Rank of 403, beat Harsha Manjunath of India 6-0, 6-2, Igor Tkachenko of Russia 6-0, 6-4, and Fajing Sun of China (ITF rank of 1,619) 6-0, 6-2 in the Quarter-finals on his way to the semis.

Meanwhile, top seeded in the Girls’ Singles draw, Sri Lanka’s reigning Under-18 national junior champion Amritha Muttiah too had reached the semi-final stage by Thursday.

Muttiah, meanwhile, beat Qing Yi Liu of China 6-1, 6-1 in the second round of Girls Singles after getting a bye in her first round match. In the Quarter-finals, she got the better of the fifth seed Indian, Megha Sehrawat, 6-1, 6-3.

Tennis in March

The SLTA announced last week that they would be hosting the 3rd International Wheelchair Tennis Open from March 26-28.

According to the SLTA sources, this tournament would be a US$2,000 prize money event.
