Produces graduates for both State and private sector
Uva University to be upgraded

Healthcare and Nutrition Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva paid a visit to the Uva university last week on an observation tour. He said that the university would be further developed.

The government has focused its attention on upgrading the Uva university since it is one of the leading educational institutions that produces graduates for both, the public and private sector, he said.

Education was fundamental to the development of a nation as it would supply required trained manpower to run a country’s services and develop its economy. Education was the best investment of any nation if a country was to be developed, the Minister said.

He pointed out that there had been a great demand for trained manpower from public and private sectors and the Uva university had been instrumental in supplying different categories of graduates whose skills could be harnessed by both sectors.

Minister de Silva also said that during the UNP regime Opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe did not want to establish this university, but it was President Mahinda Rajapaksa who realised the value of education and made arrangements to establish the Uva university.

He said that he had asked the vice chancellor of the university to prepare a complete report on the sections of the university that need to be further developed. A large number of foreign students had applied to enter the university for higher education and the government was in the process of expanding its buildings and providing more lecturers and professors.
