Nominations close with a record

* Elections dept. runs out of symbols

* Over 20 parties, independent groups in the fray

* Digamadulla has 17 parties and 49 independent groups

Nominations for the 7th Parliamentary Elections closed yesterday at 12 noon with over 20 political parties and over 40 Independent Groups handing over nomination lists for the general election scheduled for April 8.

The United Peoples Freedom Alliance, the United National Front and the Democratic National Front will contest all 22 districts. They have fielded 264 candidates each.

Deputy Commissioner of elections Mahinda Deshapriya said yesterday that as 40 symbols available with the Election Secretariat were insufficient to cater to the record number of Independent groups contesting the Digamadulla District 20 new symbols had been Gazetted on Thursday.

The Assistant Commissioner of elections for the Digamadulla District Bandara Mapa said yesterday that the district recorded the highest number of political and independent groups in the fray. Eighteen political parties and 53 Independent Groups handed over nominations. Nominations of Janawimukthi Sayogitha Peramuna and three Independent groups were rejected on technical grounds.

The second highest number of nominations had been recoded in the Batticaloa district. Assistant Commissioner of Elections, T. Krishnandalingham said yesterday that political parties and independent groups numbering 48, 17 political parties and 28 Independent Groups submitted nominations. The nominations of Sri Lanka Workers Party and three Independent Groups were rejected.

The Assistant Commissioner of elections for the Trincomalee District Nishantha Dinapriya said yesterday that 42 nomination lists had been received, 22 from political parties and 20 from independent Groups. Five nomination lists of Political Parties from Ape Jathika Peramuna,Eelavar Prajhathanthri Pakshaya,Eksath Lanka Maha Sabhawa,Ruhunu Janatha Pakshaya and sri lanka Kamkaru Pakshaya and six independent Groups were rejected.
