MLTs detailed to do other work

Of twenty Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs) posted to the provinces to deal with AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases, over ten have been appointed to other provincial health service institutions where they are not carrying out the laboratory services for which they were sent. None of the transferred technologists concerned would take responsibility should there be any problems of STD/AIDS or complications in the provinces, Ravi Kumudesh President of the Joint Council of Professions Supplementary to Medicine (JCPSM) warned yesterday.

He said it was regrettable that Public Health Department had detailed the specialized MLTs to serve in places other than the STD/AIDS clinics.

Lack of proper administration and coordination as the National STD/AIDS Programme and the provinces were the reasons for that that sorry state of affairs, Kumudesh said.

The MLTs should be transferred to STD/AIDS clinics, he said.
