Nestomalt to stage marathon in Jaffna after 27 years

With the end of the North-East war, Nestle Lanka PLC, under the brand name of Nestomalt has come forward to conduct a marathon in Jaffna to give the people in the North an opportunity to develop their sports skills.

When the Nestomalt mini marathon gets underway on March 6, it will be the first marathon to take place in Jaffna after 27 years. According to Prema Pinnawela, Secretary, Amateur Athletic Association, the last marathon was held way back in 1983.

The Nestomalt mini marathon which will start from the Duraiyappa Stadium, Jaffna will be conducted under four categories together with the support of the Athletic Association of Sri Lanka, SL Army, SL Navy, SL Police, the Education Ministry and Jaffna Municipal Council.

Having conducted four marathons in Ampara, Anuradhapura, Galle and Kegalle last year Nestomalt expects to conduct six marathons this year, including the Jaffna Mini-Marathon.

Maj. Gen. Mahinda Hathurusinghe, Commander, Security Force, Jaffna, speaking during the media briefing which took place last Tuesday in Jaffna, delivered an excellent speech about peace and harmony in the country.

"Peace cannot have any barriers and Nestomalt has given us a fine start. I will ensure that there is total support to make this event a success," he said.

"We plan to conduct a marathon from the North to the South in the near future," said Bandula Egodage, External Affairs and Activations Manager, Nestle Lanka Ltd.

The marathon which is expected to attract about 5000 runners will get underway at 3.00 pm on Saturday and the competitors will undergo a medical checkup before the event.

The first three winners of each category will receive cash prizes, trophies, medals and certificates.
