47th Thurstan-Isipatana Big Match
Ranasinghe prevents Isipatana from collapsing

A captain’s knock of 86 runs from Thivanka Ranasinghe and a gritty 44 from tail-ender Samitha Sulochana prevented Isipatana College from faltering to a low score after Thurstan paceman Ranga Wijewickrama and spinner Sachith Dias threatened them with good spells on the first day of their 47th Big Match commenced at SSC Ground yesterday.

After being 128 for seven wickets at one stage Isipatana managed to put on 221 runs thanks to the two determined knocks.

Ranasinghe anchored the batting line up facing as many as 150 balls to score his 86 runs which was inclusive of nine fours. He scored a better part of his boundaries sweeping spinners with confidence, while rest of his teammates faltered against them.

Ranasinghe was involved in three partnerships of over 40 runs. The right-hander put on a 50 run stand for the third wicket with Danushka Sandaruwan, 41 runs for the seventh wicket with Dimithri Perera and a further 57 for the eighth wicket with Sulochana.

His fine innings came to an end when he was well caught by substitute fielder Harith Dias at deep fine leg off the bowling of Wijewickrama.

Paceman Wijewickrama bowling at patches (five spells) picked up three wickets while off-spinner Sachith Dias, who bowled the bulk of overs also picked up three wickets including the wicket of Sulochana who was threatening to take Isipatana to a big total with his late heroics.
