CIS wins first basketball big match

After getting a fine start, St. Paul’s, Milagiriya couldn’t keep up the momentum as Colombo International School (CIS) bounced back in style to pull off a thriller in the first ever schools basketball big match played at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, yesterday.

CIS won the match by two points (38-36) in extra time after the full time score read 35 each.

It was the Paulians who got off to fine a start and controlled the game, but CIS put up a remarkable fight back towards the end to take the game away from St. Paul’s. St. Paul’s led 29-23 at half-time.

Onella Karunanayake of CIS with 14 points was adjudged as the Best Player while Oshadi Karunaratne won the Best Defensive Player’s award.

Lahiruka Weeraratne of St. Paul’s was declared the Best Defensive Player.

There were there display matches played between invitation schools apart from the big match and S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia, St. Joseph’s College, Colombo and a combined team of past pupils from Our Lady of Victories and Good Shepherd Convents recoded victories.

St. Paul’s has initiated this new concept under a new project named ‘Fast Break 2010’.
