Sri Lanka to field 15 maximum

The Youth Olympics organised by the Singapore National Olympic Committee under the guidance of the International Olympic Committee will be held from August 14 to 26 in Singapore.

The Youth Olympics is conducted with the intention of directing the world youth to sports and is an idea initiated by Jacques Rogge, the president of the International Olympic Committee.

3600 youth athletes representing 205 National Olympic Committees are expected to take part in this event which is managed by 800 officials.

201 events are proposed to be held in the first ever Youth Olympics. They will be in Swimming, Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Rowing, Cycling, Equestrian, Fencing, Football, Gymnastics, Handball, Hockey, Judo, Modern Pentathlon, Yachting, Shooting, Table Tennis, Taekwondo, Tennis, Triathlon, Volleyball, Weightlifting and Wrestling.

Hemasiri Fernando, the president of the National Olympic Committee said that the participation of the Sri Lankan athletes will be restricted to a maximum of 15 and the event is open for athletes of the age group of Under-18 (born in 1993/94).

To select two other candidates for the Youth Olympics, the NOC has informed Gymnastics, Weightlifting, Shooting, Yachting, Badminton, Boxing and Basketball National Associations to forward their nominations, Nishantha Piyasena, the Chief de Mission of the Sri Lanka contingent at the Youth Olympics told our sister paper ‘Divaina’. Those national associations are requested to do so before the end of May.
