

Upali Sedere (64), senior consultant to the Ministry of Education (MOE), has been appointed as the new director-general of the National Institute of Education (an advisory arm of the MOE engaged in development of education) following the demise of its former DG Prof. Lal Perera.
Upali Sedere holds a B.Ed (first class) from the University of Ceylon and a PhD from the University of Iowa, USA.
Dr. Sedere is a widely published, internationally acclaimed educationist once listed in the American Biographical Institute’s International ‘Who’. He has served as a Consultant and Chief of Party in UN projects based in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Ghana, Nigeria, Indonesia, India, Italy, Malawi, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Norway, Thailand, Tanzania, Zambia, and the Netherlands. While in Sri Lanka (1970-87) he served as a Senior Lecturer and Head of Department in the Faculty of Education.
Dr. Sedere is a Fulbright scholar and recipient of the best award at GCE (A/L) All Island Public examination. As a Senior Consultant to MOE and DG of NIE he is expected to play a vital role in resurrecting the education sector.
