Iran angry at Germany’s release of opposition Kurd

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) - Iran has summoned the German ambassador to Tehran to protest the release of the head of an Iranian Kurdish opposition group.

The official IRNA news agency said the ambassador was told Wednesday to convey Iran’s protest to Berlin after German police arrested and then released Abdolrahman Haji Ahmadi, leader of the outlawed Party for a Free Life in Kurdistan, also known as PEJAK.

PEJAK is close to the separatist Kurdistan Workers’ Party of Turkey. Iran has in the past accused PEJAK of regularly launching attacks inside Iran from bases in northwestern Iraq in the Qandil Mountain area bordering Iran and Turkey.

Like neighboring Turkey, Iran has a restive Kurdish minority that includes armed elements fighting for greater autonomy.
