Defending champions prove their class

Defending champions Wayamba cruised to the Inter-Provincial T-20 title without losing a single game and proved their strengths with an unbeaten run in the six team competition having won all their seven games. In the final at De Zoysa Stadium against Ruhuna, Mahela Jayawardene and Ajantha Mendis starred for Wayamba, who cruised to a huge 95 run win.

In the final, put into bat, Wayamba posted a massive 208 for eight in their allotted 20 overs. Jayawardene was the star for the defending champions excelling with a terrific 91 off just 39 deliveries with ten fours and six sixes.

He was well supported by opening partner Jeevantha Kulatunga, who was in fine nick throughout the competition as the openers added 89 runs for the first wicket in 7.4 overs.

Then Mendis came onto bowl a sensational spell to give Wayamba a comprehensive win. With Dinesh Chandimal going well, the game was in the balance when Mendis was introduced to the attack in the eighth over, but he produced three wickets in that over without conceding a run turning the game upside down.

Dinesh Chandimal was the only standout batsman for Ruhuna having made 64 in 33 balls with seven fours and three sixes.

Chandimal had an exceptional tournament having posted 320 runs in seven innings at an average of 53:33 and a strike rate of 158 with three half-centuries. Mahela Jayawardene was even better. In just six games, the former Sri Lanka captain accumulated 293 runs with an average of 48:83 and a strike rate of 168 with four half-centuries.

Jeevantha Kulatunga was the only other player to score more than 200 runs having amassed 277 runs at an average of 69:25 and a strike rate of 152. He also scored the only century in the competition when he smashed an unbeaten 104 against Kandurata in Galle off just 62 balls. What was more significant in that knock was there wasn’t a single six.

Sachithra Senanayake continued from where he left in the 50 over format and picked up 14 wickets for Ruhuna while Janaka Gunaratne picked up 12 wickets.

Kulatunga was named Player of the Series while Gunaratne emerged as the Best Bowler with Chandimal securing the Best Batsman’s award.

Sri Lanka Cricket Combined XI, a team of under-23 players pooled together to give them exposure were a failure having failed to win a single game.

The first round game between Basnahira South and Kandurata ended in a dispute after a scoring error. Batting first, Kandurata set a target of 164 for Basnahira South and the scorers recorded that Basnahira South had scored 166 to win by one wicket. But following a protest by Kandurata and review of video evidence it was accepted by the authorities that Hashantha Fernando had been credited with a four off Dilhara Fernando which did not happen.

The error was then corrected and both teams were given two points each.
