Following the recent exposures on Page 1 of The Island on February 2 and 10, that sand mining continued unabated in the Kelani River, right under the Kelani Bridge, residents of the area say that the miners have packed up and left the scene.

Senior officials of the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau and the Coast Conservation Department had taken steps to immediately stop such acts, though they had both passed the blame onto each other earlier.
