The Fonseka – Karuna Amman Conondrum  – a reply

I refer to the letter by "Prolanka" appearing on the ‘Opinion’ page of The Island of March 17, under the above caption. In his letter, "Prolanka" appears to justify the full pardon the president has unilaterally granted the former LTTE terrorist leader Karuna Amman (KA), who was responsible for killing soldiers and civilians and committing other terrorist activities including bombing of civilian targets (which "Prolanka" has omitted mention of). He also seems to condone KA’s appointment as a vice president of the Ruling party and as a ‘Minster’ in the Government, in appreciation of the assistance given by him to defeat the rest of the LTTE leadership.

"Prolanka" correctly states that "Karuna weakened the LTTE immediately by defecting along with his cadres" is he then giving credit to the machinations of the CFA during which period this occurred? Of course the ‘information’ that KA gave the government forces helped in defeating the rest of the LTTE. However, due credit must be given to the brave soldiers in that, the fact must not be ignored that with or without KA’s assistance, the combined Armed Forces led by General Sarath Fonseka, would have still defeated the rest of the LTTE terrorists, of course with the backing of the Government and the President! Could "Prolanka" however, justify the fact that KP, who took over the LTTE leadership after Prabhakaran’s death and continued shipping missiles, arms and ammunition to the terrorists, against the Government and the Armed Forces and was the purported owner of many ships and billions of LTTE funds till his purported ‘capture’, is also enjoying the patronage of the Government and is supposed to be living a life of luxury, along with those such as ‘Daya Master’ and George Master’ who fought the armed forces to the end. Could "Prolanka" enlighten us on what they are being rewarded for?

By extension of the ‘logic’ presented by him, does "Prolanka" insinuate that if the lives of the rest of the terrorist LTTE leaders had been spared, they, too, would have joined the government and assisted them in defeating the remnants of the LTTE Diaspora and would as a reward, be enjoying the Government’s party membership and ministerial powers as enjoyed by KA or the luxury lives enjoyed by KP and others?
