SLRFU CEO drops rugby bomb!
Sri Lanka Rugby Football Union (SLRFU) CEO Lasitha Guneratne dropped a bombshell yesterday when he said that he would immediately address the alleged use of performance enhancing drugs by Sri Lanka’s rugby players if he gets elected as one of the Vice Presidents of the SLRFU at its next Annual General Meeting (AGM).

Guneratne made these comments during an interview with The Island when speaking about the role of the next SLRFU committee that will be elected at the SLRFU AGM, scheduled for March 30 in Colombo.

"I have watched rugby for a while and can see that there is no room for fair competition. This trend towards consuming performance enhancing drugs by players is dangerous and it is sad that no one has addressed this to date," Guneratne said.

Guneratne said that Sri Lanka was the only country in the world where one of its national players was tested positive in a dope test. He said that the menace of using drugs in rugby will be addressed by the National Olympic Committee (NOC) and World Anti-doping Agency (WADA).

Guneratne said that he was confident that he would be elected as the SLRFU Vice President at the next AGM which has now generated a lot interest with the post also being contested by veteran rugby administrator Arjun Dharmadasa. According to sources from the rugby fraternity, Asanga Senewiratne is expected to be elected as President SLRFU without a contest.

He said he was confident that the majority of the rugby playing clubs would back him, but said that he might not be the most popular sports administrator around because of the straight forward decisions he had taken as the CEO of the SLRFU.

He also said that the next set of rugby administrators should bring a solution to the clashing of the school and club rugby seasons and added, "We should schedule the rugby season in keeping with the international rugby calendar" He also opined that steps should be taken to see that rugby players give priority to national rugby.

Asked whether rugby might lose the ideal person to oversee rugby development if he won and Arjuna Dharmadasa lost at next SLRFU AGM he said, "I think he (Arjun) has a problem in not having the necessary credentials to be eligible to contest at the AGM. But overall I don’t see any rugby development in the country. The standard of club rugby has gone down and so has the standard of refereeing and coaching. If there is anything of interest in the local rugby scene, that is in school rugby. I see some development in this area. I don’t see rugby development, but there have been efforts to spread the awareness of the rugby in Sri Lanka"

Arjun Dharmadasa, who is bidding for the post of Vice President, when contacted, rubbished claims by people who say that he doesn’t sport the necessary credentials to be elected to the executive committee of the SLRFU. "If I didn’t have the qualifications to serve the SLRFU how come I was elected on 12 occasions to serve the SLRFU committee? I was also put in charge of rugby development at one time. One person who wants to see me out didn’t object to my presence when I served the SLRFU when he was president so why the fuss now," asked Dharmadasa. He said that he qualified to serve the SLRFU executive committee because he had played for upcountry and even captained the SLRFU President’s XV, qualifications which he said came under the category of representative rugby.

He said that the new SLRFU executive committee should first rid the sport of politics. "We should put a programme structure in place because we have spent one full year doing nothing. The development programmes should be started immediately because now the majority of the country’s rugby players are coming from the country and not the city,"

There is a lot of speculation that former SLRFU CEO Dilroy Fernando would contest for the post of secretary. But when contacted, Fernando said that he wasn’t interested in contesting for any of the posts at the next rugby AGM. "As the referees’ society president, I’ll any way have a seat at the SLRFU council. The only thing we (referees) are interested in is to see that the ban on the Sri Lanka Society of Rugby Football Referees (SLSRFR) is lifted. Asanga Senewiratne has promised to lift this ban once he is elected as President of the SLRFU. If this is not done, the loser will be Sri Lanka rugby," he said.

The Western Province Rugby Football Union, which has the biggest clout in deciding who gets elected at SLRFU AGM, is expected to meet today at Havelock Sports Club, to decide on their choice of office bearers who should get elected at the next rugby AGM.
