

Sri Lanka’s renowned Boxer Manju Wanniarchchi and T. B. Suresh brought glory to Sri Lanka by winning a silver and a Bonze medal respectively at the 5th Commonwealth Boxing Championships, which concluded in New Delhi in India, yesterday.
After beating Tira Falo Stako of Botswana in the Semi-final, Wanniarchchi qualified for the final against Ian Weaver (England) in the Bantam Weight Under-56 category, but lost the contest by seven points to one (three rounds).
T. B. Suresh who fought in the Fly Weight Under-52 Kg category lost the semi-final encounter to Oliver Lavivi of Mauritius by three points to one and had to be satisfied with the bonze medal.
After taking into account the performances of the Sri Lanka men’s boxing team in international competitions, excluding the feats at the South Asian Games, boxing analysts rate their performances at this year’s Commonwealth Championships as the best,.
According to Hemantha Weerasinghe, Secretary Amateur Boxing Association, Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka’s medals tally at the Commonwealth Games will increase to four.
The other two medals were won by A.K.G. Sameera and Harsha Kumara in the 2005 Commonwealth Boxing Championships.
This year Sri Lanka were represented at the Commonwealth Boxing Championships by TM Thenakoon Light Fly - 49 Kgs (Sri Lanka Army ), PD Suresh - Fly - 52 Kgs (Sri Lanka Air Force) , MDK Wanniarachchi - Bantam 56 Kgs (Slimline SC) RMAB unathilaka Light - 60 Kgs (Slimline SC) RT ayathilaka Middle - 75 Kgs (Slimline SC).
