A formidable Moratu Vidyalaya, captained by third year coloursman Anuruddhaka Kalhara will face a rejuvenated Sri Sumangala College, Panadura, skippered by fifth year coloursman, Chathura Nilaweera, in the 58th ‘Battle of the Golds’ Big Match which commences at the De Soysa Stadium, today.
Moratu Vidyalaya are the favourites as they have tested their prowess against formidable opponents, recording outright victories against Division I teams. They beat Kalutara Vidyalaya, St. Sylvester’s and President’s in tournament matches this season, while recording an outright victory against St. Mary’s College, Kegalle, in a friendly match. They lost to St. Joseph’s in a tournament match, but when the two day tournament ended last month, Moratu Vidyalaya were among the top teams in the Division I tournament to book a place in the knockout tournament.
Having amassed huge scores against Division I opposition and having recorded victories against Moratu Vidyalaya, they will go into the Big Match as favourites, but their arch rivals won’t be easy prey as they have peaked in time.
Sri Sumangala, captained by experienced campaigner Chathura Nilaweera played 15 matches this season. They suffered several (five) defeats, early in the tournament but have seemed a rejuvenated outfit of late as they have under their belt three outright victories. A nine wicket victory against formidable Dharmasoka in a friendly match last week has provided the spark to face their arch rivals with confidence. Sri Sumangala beat Sri Jayawardenepura, Siri Piyaratana and Dharmasoka Colleges this season.
When the two teams meet in the 58th encounter, Sri Sumangala, who were the last to record a win in 2006, lead the series 8-6.
