44th Battle of the Blues-Ambalangoda
Dharmasoka better in  second essay

Given a target of 202 runs to chase in 27 overs, Devananda College were 90 for five wickets at close as their 44th Battle of the Blues Big Match against arch-rivals Dharmasoka College ended in a draw at Ambalangoda yesterday.

Chasing the target, Rishika Theekshana scored 52 runs laced with nine fours for Devananda but they were well short of the target when the stumps were drawn on the final day.

If they had any plans of going for the target in such a short span of 27 overs, then they had to fold them up when Chamath Gunasinghe completed a match bag of nine wickets with a four wicket haul. He was later adjudged the Best Bowler of the Match. Gunasinghe’s four wickets discouraged Devananda going at their full speed.

The day began with the Sokians still needing 60 runs to close the first innings deficit with nine wickets in hand and they disappointed Devananda bowlers amassing 325 for eight wickets declared as three batsmen scored half-centuries.

Both overnight batsmen, Nilusha Uththamadasa and Chalitha Madushan crossed the half-century mark before Yohan de Silva top scored with 71 runs. With Devananda bowlers, who had the credit of restricting the Sokians for a paltry 56 runs in the first innings, failing to penetrate their top order batting line up in the second innings they had to opt for part time bowlers who finally got them breakthroughs. Rishika Theekshana, one such bowler was later adjudged the Man of the Match for his good all-round performances. He picked up two wickets and shared five wickets with Ramesh Lakshitha.

Individual awards:

Man of the Match: Rishika Theekshana

Meanwhile, Devananda College youngster Charith Sudharaka who had been selected for Sri Lanka Schools Under-15 team’s tour of Malaysia was awarded a special prize at the awards ceremony.
