‘Battle of Kelaniya’ from tomorrow

The 22nd ‘Battle of Kelaniya’ Big Match between Gurukula College and Sri Dharmaloka College will be played on two days commencing tomorrow (March 23), at the P. Sara Oval.

While Gurukula march in under the captaincy of sixth year colursman Sheshan Nivanka, Sri Dharmaloka will be skippered by sixth year coloursman Iranga Krishan.

As it has been for the past 21 years, the two teams will be eager to record the first victory of the series.

The big match series, which commenced in 1988, has not seen a victory recorded to date with all previous encounters ending in draws. Matches had been played at the R. Premadasa Stadium for the past few years and the two teams will look forward to record a victory when the venue shifts to the P. Sara this year.

Skipper Nivanka has several coloursmen strengthening his side in the annual battle. Nivanka, who is on top of the highest run scorers list with an aggregate of over 500 runs will have Rasika Koththagoda, Lakshitha Dilhan and Kasun Udara to make strong the batting department.

Niwanka, who is also an off spinner, is their key bowler. He has taken over 40 wickets and will control the spin department with Rukshan Bandara and Kasun Udara while fast bowlers Gayan Buddhika, Roshan Anuruddha and Madushan Chathuranga make up the pace department.

Skipper Iranga Krishan is the leading scorer for Dharmaloka with over 600 runs, inclusive of one century and five half centuries. He will have in his ranks Sameera Madhusanka, Nilanka Subodha, Chathura Lakmina and Sulaj Gayashan who have done well during the season as his key players.

The two teams will also clash in a Limited Overs Big Match on March 28. It will be the 19th time the two teams meet and Dharmaloka lead the series with 10 wins against Gurukula’s seven. One match ended in a no-decision.
