Preference battle hots up as D-day approaches

With the general election over a week away, the battle among UPFA heavyweights for preference votes is hotting up though President Mahinda Rajapaksa warned them not to fight each other. Political sources say growing hostilities among leading UPFA candidates have left UNP-led United National Front and the JVP-led Democratic National Front to campaign without hindrance. They noted that the general election campaign is relatively peaceful as far the opposition campaign is concerned as the UPFA does not anticipate a real challenge from the opposition.

Lankan born Bahrain resident held for "anti-government activities"
A Sri Lankan born resident of Bahrain is now under detention in Colombo for "anti-government activities", a senior police official said last week.
