      Editorial:Lawbreakers seeking to be lawmakers
Politicians are among beneficiaries of the fertiliser subsidy given to farmers to enhance paddy production.
Agriculture Minister Maithripala Sirisena and Wayamba Chief Minister Athula Wijesinghe yesterday acknowledged that they were among the recipients of fertiliser subsidy. Minister Sirisena said that he had received subsidised fertiliser as he was registered as a farmer.
He was responding to a query by The Island at yesterday’s media conference at the Mahaweli Centre, to discuss their efforts to boost the agriculture sector.
Environment and Natural Resources Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka, pumps petrol produced from used plastic and polythene at a special facility in Avissswella on Wednesday. A senior ministry spokesman said they were in the process of conducting further tests to determine the viability of the operation.
