Kingswood triumph over St. Anthony’s
Kingswood College, who were elated after making an impressive display through their three quarters, kicked off the season on a winning note as they triumphed over St. Anthony’s College by 24 points to 10 in the Singer President’s Schools Rugby League at Nittawela yesterday.
In a game that had to be condensed to 35 minutes each half and subsequently a further ten minutes in the second half that was played in pitch darkness due to rain, gave the Kingswoodians the lead at the breather with eight points to three.
It was the Kingswood’s line that put up a scintillating display that won them the game. It was in stark contrast with the St. Anthony’s line which was not as impressive as the opponents’.
Anthonians ‘smelt blood’ seven minutes into the game as their fly half Chamara Kumara slotted a penalty to lead 3-0 but the Kingswoodians shot back to bridge the gap in identical form off the efforts of their skipper and full back Rajitha Sansoni.
Came the 16th minute of play, Kingswood exerted more pressure on the Anthonians and subsequently crossed over to score an unconverted try by Sansoni which made the half time score 8-3.
Upon resumption, Kingswood increased their lead by 13-3 off an unconverted try by scrum half Mohamed Afzal.
Ten minutes later, the Anthonians reduced the gap 13-10 as their lock forward Afzal went over for Kumara to do the honours off his fine kick at the goal.
Then came yet another fall for the Anthonians as Kingswood worked the line skillfully to send Afzal over again scoring another unconverted try to lead 18 points to 10.
Placing the icing on the cake was flanker Chethiya Wadugodapitiya off a try which too went unconverted.
