LG polls under amended Constitution – Nimal
UPFA bags two UNP/UNF members, eyes five more to reach magical 2/3 majority

The newly-appointed Irrigation and Water Resources Minster Nimal Siripala de Silva says the government intends to amend the Constitution before President Mahinda Rajapaksa begins his second term.

President Rajapaksa will take oaths in the third week of November 2010 in keeping with a Supreme Court directive.

Former Leader of the House de Silva says the draft legislation required to do away with the Proportional Representation system is ready for implementation within the next few months.

Addressing a gathering at the Badulla public library yesterday afternoon, de Silva said the next elections to Local Government authorities would be held under the first-past-the-post system soon after President Rajapaksa’s second term got underway.

SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena told a press conference at the Mahaweli Centre that Local Government elections would be held next year.

He said the government needed only five more seats to achieve a two-thirds majority as it had already won over two UNP/UNF MPs, P. Digambaram and Prabha Ganeshan to take their tally to 146 seats in the 225-member parliament. Minister de Siva emphasised that the change in the Constitution before end of this year was now a certainty.
