Jayasinghe guides Nalanda to semis
by Reemus Fernando
Skipper Dinuk Jayasinghe cracked an unbeaten 57 runs and combined for an unfinished fourth wicket stand of 80 runs with Suranga Tennakoon to steer Nalanda College to a seven wicket victory over Maris Stella College in the Inter-School Under-19 Twenty-20 quarter-final match played at NCC Ground, yesterday.
Chasing 118 runs to win, Nalanda felt early jitters when spinner Angelo Jayasinghe picked up two quick wickets to place them at 38 for three. But skipper Jayasinghe managed to put the pressure back on to the opposition with his belligerent knock.
Jayasinghe cracked four fours and three sixes in his unbeaten 57 runs which came in just 45 balls. Tennakoon was unbeaten on 27.
Earlier, speedsters Adeesha Nanayakkara and Ishan Rangana and spinner Jayasinghe picked up two wickets apiece to restrict Maris Stella, who choose to bat, to 117 runs in their allotted 20 overs.
Now Nalanda will meet D.S. Senanayake College in the semi-final scheduled to be played at the same venue on Tuesday.
Scores:
Maris Stella 117 for 9 in 20 overs (Sathira Dileepa 25, Dasun Shanaka 34; Adeesha Nanayakkara 2/11, Ishan Rangana 2/28, Dinuk Jayasinghe 2/22)
Nalanda 118 for 3 in 16.5 overs (Nipun Karunanayake 13, Adeesha Nanayakkara 10, Dinuk Jayasinghe 57 n.o, Suranga Tennakoon 27 n.o ;Angelo Jayasinghe 2/18)
Satharasinghe shines in DSS
victory
A run a ball 42 runs from Charith Satharasinghe became invaluable for D.S. Senanayake College as they defended a low score of 104 runs to cruise to an eight run victory over Moratu Vidyalaya in the Inter-School Under-19 Twenty-20 tournament quarter-final played in the morning at NCC Ground yesterday.
D.S. Senanayake College posted 104 runs, thanks largely to Satharasinghe’s run a ball 42 runs as none of the other batsmen could top 15 runs for them in the face of some good bowling spells from Anuruddha Kalhara and Janindu Devinda who picked up three wickets apiece.
Later D.S. Senanayake managed to restrict Moratu lads to 96 runs as the spinners took the bowling honours for them.
Scores:
D.S. Senanayake 104 for 9 in 20 overs (Charith Satharasinghe 42, Charith Jayampathi 13, Madumal Weerasinghe 14; Anuruddha Kalhara 3/24, Janindu Devinda 3/18)
Moratu Vidyalaya 96 all out in 19 overs (Avishka Peiris 15, Sujeewa Wishwajith 23, Janitha Nimesh 10, Janindu Devinda 19, Asanka Silva 19; Sahan Amarasinghe 2/16, Lasith Abeyratne 2/13, Mohamed Ijaz 2/20, Malshan Gunasinghe 2/24)
