Principal allowed bail

Ambalangoda: A principal arrested for allegedly caning two girls studying at school, has been released on bail by a court in Balapitiya.

The Meetiyagoda police produced him before the Magistrate, Ms. N. I. Abeygunasekera.

Y. S. Kahingala is the principal of Batapola MMV in the Ambalangoda education zone.

The court released Kahingala on cash bail of Rs. 5,000 and personal bail of Rs. 50,000 and postponed the case.

Police submitted a report by a government medical officer, who had examined the girls, to the court.

The principal said he punished the girls for misbehaviour with the sole aim of correcting them and to enforce discipline at the school.

The attorney-at-law, who appeared for the principal, said it was necessary to punish errant students. But principals and teachers faced the risk of being brought to court as offenders in the process of enforcing discipline.

While SI Siri Kumara of the Meetiyagoda police prosecuted, attorneys-at-law M. W. Aruna Pradeep, Sasanka Jayasekera, Sumith Dhammika and N. Mendis appeared for the defence.
