Severe shortage of teachers for aesthetic studies in NWP

A recent survey conducted by the Ministry of Education of the North Western Province shows that, 354 teachers are required to fill the existing vacancies in govt. schools in the Kurunegala and Puttalam districts to teach aesthetic subjects.

Due to lack of teachers in music, dancing and art, students who are due to sit the GCE O/L examination this year are reported to be worried over whether they would be able to cover the syllabi .

J. M. Sumanaratne, a Senior School Principal in the Bingiriya Educational Division told ‘The Island’ that primary school teachers qualified in aesthetic studies had been deployed for teaching these subjects.

Former Minister of Education Susil Premajayantha had planned to recruit aesthetic graduates to teach these subjects prior to the parliamentary elections. These graduates will be recruited, next year, he said.
