CMC seeks help to beautify city

The Chief City Administrator of the CMC, Omar Kamil, is calling on the private and corporate sectors to assist in the programme to beautify the city which he said "belongs to all of us".

Kamil told The Island that people should get together to keep the environment free of pollution. The public and corporate sector must get involved in planting trees, landscaping etc. They were morally bound to assist the municipality.

He has a skillful work force at the top and middle level, which makes his task easier and the CMC will continue with the Road Development work, street lighting, traffic flow to ease the congestion of vehicles in traffic jams, garbage disposal etc.

"Watawala Plantations and Standard Chartered Bank have helped us to improve the facilities at the Vihara Maha Devi Park and Sathutu Uyana by providing new benches and a variety of flowering plants, he said.

The committed workforce of the CMC must be thanked for the successful completion of the IIFA ceremonies held in Colombo.

"The road infrastructure programme was started in January, but was accelerated due to the IIFA ceremony held last week. We improved all roads leading to places where events were held. "This would normally have taken us about six months, but we finished it much faster with Rs. 25 million set apart by the CMC for Road Development".

The roads did not get under water due to the rain and the roads that were developed were Panchikawatte Road, Sangarajah Mawatha, Blomendhal Road, vicinity of the Sugathadasa Indoor and Outdoor Stadiums, Maitland Place, Maitland Crescent, Bullers Road in the vicinity of the BMICH, Dharmapala Mawatha and near Public Library, he said.
