V-Day ceremony on June 18

The delayed victory parade to commemorate the first anniversary of the defeat of Terrorism after 30 years of war against the LTTE will be held on Friday (June 18) at Galle Face at 8 a.m., with the participation of the three armed forces, the Police and the Civil Defence Force.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa will preside over this event, which was earlier scheduled for May 20, but postponed due to inclement weather.

Another event to commemorate victory day will be held in the Parliament grounds, 'Sri Jayawardenepura, at 4.30 p.m. on the same day where President Rajapaksa will be chief guest.

Army Commander Lt. General Jagath Jayasuriya, Navy Commander vice Admiral Thisara Samarasinghe, Acting Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Air Force Commander Air Marshal Roshan Gunatilleke, IGP Mahinda Balasuriya and other high ranking officials of the Defence establishment including Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, diplomats and other VIPs are scheduled to attend both ceremonies.

The events will be telecast live.

The public are requested to observe two minutes silence and light oil lamps in memory of the fallen heroes at 6 p.m.
