Container topples near Kelanitissa power station
A truck carrying a forty foot container toppled in the middle of the road during heavy traffic hours, yesterday morning, near the Kelanitissa Power Station. No one was seriously injured in yesterday's accident.
Due to frequent road accidents involving container trucks, the City Traffic Police will launch an extensive programme aimed at minimising such mishaps.
A spokesman for the City Traffic Police said that their investigations had revealed that carelessness on the part of drivers had
been the main cause of accidents. He said that their records indicated that at least one accident involving containers was reported each month.
He admitted that some time back container carriers were allowed to ply only during night but that regulation had been lifted. Asked why container trucks had been permitted again during busy traffic hours during day time, he said that it has been done with a view to facilitate the country's development.
He said that the ban of container movement on roads during day time had led to undue delays in transportation of goods to and from the Colombo Port and had impacted on the economy adversely.
