

Dairy villages in hill country
Dairy villages are to be set up in the hill country on the initiatives taken by the Ministry of Livestock and Rural Community Development for the benefit of dairy farmers.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Livestock and rural Community Development told The Island that the proposed plan will consist of schemes to increase the income levels of the plantation community through small and medium scale farms, introduction of new technologies, introduction of poultry farming, fertiliser production, enhancing self employment opportunities, creating meadows/grasslands, appointing veterinary surgeons, training of various skills to youth and establishing loan facilities.
Dairy production is to be expanded to village level with modern methods and is expected to promote livelihood of the plantation community. The Ministry will also assist the youth with potential to improve dairy production and create self employment opportunities through the proposed schemes.
