Govt. home and home clash at Beliatta

Former Fisheries Minister of the Southern Provincial Council and Hambantota District UPFA deputy team leader for this election D. V. Rohana Priya Upul was arrested by the Beliatta Police yesterday for allegedly assaulting supporters of the same party candidate M. K. Kasun, the son of late SPC minister M. K. Ranjith alias Chandi Malli.
Five supporters of M. K. Kasun were admitted to the Beliatta District Hospital and two of them were transferred to the Matara General Hospital later. Two supporters of D. V. Upul are also warded in the Nakulugamuwa District Hospital. In a separate incident, UPFA activists also assaulted Tharaka Dilshan, son of D.V. Upul. The victim is receiving treatment at the Tangalle base hospital.
The clash occurred when supporters of Kasun allegedly demolished an election office of D. V. Upul, run by a member of Beliatta Pradeshiya Sabha, Kelum Priyankara, situated at Mihindupura in the Beliatta police area.
Officer-in-charge of Beliatta police station Inspector Pushpakumara Wijenayake told The Island that according to the statements given by the supporters of UPFA candidate Kasun Upul had attacked them around 1.00 am yesterday.
IP Wijenayake said that the condition of those who were warded in the Beliatta hospital was not serious.
The former provincial minister was released on bail by the Walasmulla Magistrate over assaulting UNP supporters in Kariyamadiththa in mid February.
Meanwhile, the Elections Department said yesterday that it had received 798 election related complaints so far since the closing of nominations on February 06.
The highest number of complaints, 130, had been reported from the Matara District, while 25 violent incidents were reported from all six districts of Western and Southern Provinces, department sources said.
