Colombo Mayor A.J.M. Muzammil alleged that a leading UNP Parliamentarian prevented several UNP Councillors from attending Thursday’s (20) foundation stone laying ceremony for the proposed market complex at Dematagoda except for Deputy Mayor Titus Perera and Premaratne Kasturiarachchi.

Speaking on the occasion, the City Father said that the construction work started on Thursday itself and it was undertaken by CMC workers themselves. It was scheduled to be opened on December 1 by Defence and Urban Development Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa. CMC had allocated Rs. 47 million for the project.

He said that he was an UNP’er and would continue to be so despite various speculations that he was to cross-over to the government. Other obstacles had been placed before him. He said that he had been in the UNP like its National Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe with whom he was on a cordial relationship contrary to what certain elements speculated.

Muzammil said that he would never be intimidated though certain so-called UNP’ers attempted to do so and would never permit any unauthorised constructions within the city by any person. He said that a false allegation had been made against him that the portraits of President Mahinda Rajapaksa and Gotabhaya Rajapaksa adorned some bus stands on Layards Broadway.

Defence and Urban Development Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa said that the government had never considered which political party held power in the CMC and that development work in Colombo would continue with the assistance of the CMC.

The younger Rajapaksa sibling said that the solid waste problem facing the city would be solved very soon with US dollars 90 million from the World Bank and those living in the vicinity of the solid waste dumping site at Kolonnawa would be relocated at a new housing scheme.
