He robbed 14 houses at the same lane within three weeks

Residents catch burglar, hand him over to police

Vigilant residents of 6th Lane, Nawala Road in the early hours of Wednesday nabbed a 47-year-old suspect who is alleged to have burgled 14 houses on that road within the last three weeks and handed him over to the Welikada police.


Police media unit told The Island yesterday that the suspect from Mawathagama in Kurunegala who had arrived in a car worth four million rupees robbed houses by opening windows with the help of two screwdrivers had been roughed up by the residents and handed over to the police.


A resident told The Island that about fourteen houses had been robbed while their occupants were fast asleep.


The suspect had smoked inside houses he robbed, eaten food he found in refrigerators and closed all the doors before he made off with cash, credit cards, jewellery and other valuables, the police said, noting that he had been an experienced burglar.


The suspect is said to be an owner of two private buses and three houses in the vicinity of the houses he burgled. The police described him as stoutly built.
