Barely a week after the drunkard escapade of a national selector during the Royal – Thomian, another national selector is under the spotlight for his alleged connections with the underworld.

Cricketer turned politician Pramodya Wickramasinghe is a member of the five man national selection panel headed by former captain Sanath Jayasuriya.

There had been several instances where Pramodya’s volatile character caused stirs in cricket circles and his assault on a cricket board employee in 2009 hit the headlines. Pramodya was a member of the Cricket Interim Committee at that time.

However, the actions of the former paceman during the past week have raised questions of his possible connections with the notorious Matara underworld. Pramodya, a political turncoat, seems to be using his goons at Matara to intimidate and threaten his cricket opponents.

Despite the selectors’ actions that have tarnished the image of the sport, recently the Ministry of Sports in an extraordinary move extended the tenure of all five selectors until March 2015.

The move raised many eye-brows as all five selectors are paid an allowance. Worse, Pramodya Wickramasinghe last year became the first ever paid Sri Lankan selector and will continue to remain a paid selector until 2015 March.
