Defence and Urban Development Ministry Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa has promised to take immediate action to evict all illegal occupants who have encroached on the Kandy hospital premises.

President of the Government Medical Officers’ Association Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya told The Island that on behalf of the GMOA he had held a discussion with Defence Secretary onthe issue and explained to him that about 26 acres out of the hospital-owned 58 acres had been illegally occupied by some encroachers. Even the police had encroached on some acres where a police resort had been built, the GMOA chief said.

Dr. Padeniya said though the Kandy hospital was the second largest hospital in Sri Lanka it was still without an accident service. Unlike the National Hospital, Colombo, the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital, the Colombo South Teaching hospital, Kalubowila, the Kandy General hospital had become the main referral hospital covering many areas such as Moneragala, Badulla, Ampara, Polonnaruwa and Nawalapitiya. But, due to unauthorised structures erected by encroachers on hospital land, the development of the Cancer, Maternity and Accidents units were not possible.

GMOA Branch Secretary of the Kandy hospital Dr. Saman Karunathilaka said those units had to be developed urgently to cope with the growing number of patients.

The GMOA parent union had held discussions with the Defence Secretary, who had promised immediate action to evict the unauthorised occupants from the hospital land, including the police resort, he said.

Dr. Karunathilaka said the Defence Secretary had instructed the Urban Development Authority (UDA) and the Road Development Authority (RDA) to evict all illegal occupants from the hospital premises.
