Robbers wearing full face helmets strike in Matugama, make off with Rs. 5 mn

Close on the heels of Monday’s heist at the Seeduwa branch of Commercial Bank, another daring daylight armed robbery was committed at a leasing company in Matugama yesterday morning. The robbers managed to hide their faces by wearing full-face helmets. They made off with Rs. 5 million from an officer of a leasing company at Agalawatta, Matugama, when he got down from a van they travelled in from Colombo, carryng money.

Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana told The Island that the van had just parked near the LOLC company at Matugama town, a few meters away, after it arrived there from Colombo with the officer carrying money in a bag accompanied by a security guard with a repeater shot gun and a driver.

The SSP said that the robbers on a motorcycle had snatched the bag containing money from the officer just a few metres away from the company around 11.00 a.m.

According to the investigations conducted by the Matugama police station, the robbers had waited until the officer got down from the van.

The SSP said that the incident had occurred in a fraction of a second.

Asked whether the robbers had got inside help, the SSP said that the investigation were being carried out would assess the footage of the CCTV camera fixed at the LOLC branch.

Sources said that there had been police officers on the road controlling traffic and if they implemented the existing law that banned the full-face helmets, the robbers could have been easily arrested.

The SSP said with there being copycat robberies committed by underworld figures wearing full face helmets and the matter would be discussed with the Inspector General of Police, N. K. Illangakoon soon.
