Matugama police are grilling four suspects including the mastermind of the Rs. 5 million heist outside a branch of LOLC Company on the Agalawatte road on Tuesday morning, on a 24 hour detention order issued by the Matugama magistrate yesterday.

The police had released the other three men arrested on that day, the driver of the van that carried the money to the company from Colombo and the two security guards after questioning them, as they had no links to the daring heist, police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana told The Island last night.

The mastermind, a carpenter by profession and the elder brother of the security OIC of the company, also directly implicated in the robbery and from whom the bag of money was snatched, was arrested on Wednesday.

A special police team from Matugama in the early hours of Tuesday arrested from a house in Boralesgamuwa two armed robbers aged 21 and 20 who had staged the daring heist wearing full face helmets, within 18 hours of the robbery.

The police arrested the other suspects, including the security OIC on the information provided by the first two suspects and the first two arrests were made possible by the great deal of information provided by ordinary people who had observed the route to one of the suspect’s home at Boralesgamuwa.
