When a doc loses his cool

By Norman Palihawadana

A mother had complained to Matale police that her five-year-old son was brutally assaulted by a doctor attached to the Matale hospital after she had taken the child to the hospital to obtain treatment for fever on Sunday.

The mother of the victim Sunethra Malini (45) said "My son leaned against the wall of the doctors cubicle after another boy tapped in it and the annoyed doctor came out and dragged my son away. My son came rushing to me crying and said that the doctor kicked him on the thigh’"

She said on the advice of those who witnessed what happened, she complained to the police.

When "The Island" spoke to the victim Namal Tharaka Ranatunge over the phone, he said that the doctor pressed him against the hardboard wall and kicked him on his thigh.

Director of the Matale Hospital Dr. Arjuna Tillakaratne said the hospital authorities would conduct an independent inquiry though a complaint had not been lodged.

Dr. Tillakaratne said that he was confident that the child had told the truth.

Dr. Navin de Soysa, spokesman for the GMOA said that it would hold a separate inquiry about the alleged assault.
