Midwives of the Colombo District yesterday smashed coconuts at the Modera, Kali Meni Kovil, invoking the godess to grant a solution to the issue which had led them to resort to strike action lasting over a month.

President of the Government Midwifery Service Association (GMSA) Colombo District Branch, D. Chandrawathy, said that 12 MOH offices in the Colombo District had gathered at the Kovil to call for the Godess’ intervention and that of President Mahinda Rajapaksa to resolve the issue in which their service was being threatened by the nurses.

The Midwives have struck work in countrywide MOH offices following the Health Ministry’s decision to provide midwifery training to nurses.

Responding to a question, Chandrawathy said Kolonnawa MOH office alone attended to approximately 60 pregnant mothers during the four clinic days of the month and 130 to 150 children below the age of five and infants during the same period. However the numbers differ from area to area, she said.

Meanwhile, pregnant mothers and children were turned away from MoH offices due to lack of midwives to provide maternal and child care services. (DJ)
